So you want to build a massive chest or take your chest building workouts to the next level?
Who doesn’t… a muscular chest will make you stand out from the crowd, command attention, and turn some heads along the way.
Here are four ways to take your chest building workouts to the next level.
4 Ways to Build a Bigger Chest
Chest Building Tip #1: Focus on the Negative
You know the routine… you get under the barbell and start lifting and lowering the bar as quickly as possible.
Next time you’re under the barbell, keep raising the bar explosively but slow it down on the lowering part of the exercise (the negative part).
The negative lifting or release phase can help you speed up your chest development quickly. Weightlifters at all levels of experience make the common mistake of allowing gravity to assist them. Avoid falling into this trap, and the extra exertion will significantly improve the gains you make from your lifting.
This is the number one tip to build chest muscles fast.
Chest Building Tip #2: Use Dumbbells Not Barbells
Although working with barbells will still produce positive results, these will not be as optimal as using dumbbells, because you should be working each pectoral muscle separately.
The human body is never exactly the same on both sides, so when you lift with a barbell you are really allowing the stronger side of your body to compensate for the weaker side. If you use a separate weight for each side, you can tailor the weight to each side’s needs, and produce far better results.
Also, lifting with dumbbells gives you a much greater range of motion which hits more muscle fibers.
Chest Building Tip #3: Add Pull-ups to Your Routine
Though this isn’t an exercise that isolates the chest muscle, incorporating pull-ups into your routine is a great way to see gains in your chest.
Pull-ups (or chin-ups) aren’t designed specifically to build your chest, but when they are performed with a very wide grip, they are very effective in building the sides of your abdomen and the very outside of your pecs.
After doing your regular chest routine, add a few chin-ups, and you will notice the difference they make in helping you to build chest your chest muscles (I guarantee you’ll feel it).
There are also side benefits to this pull-ups and chin-ups, as your back and shoulders are developed in conjunction with your chest.
Chest Building Tip #4: Do Supersets and Combo Sets
Want to supercharge your chest muscle building efforts?
Add supersets and combo sets to your exercise routine. As soon as you have finished one exercise, whatever that may be, don’t wait to have a rest period, move straight to the next exercise.
As an example, after doing a bench press immediately move to dips. Or go right from a bench press to a wide-grip pull-up.
This will surely be challenging but the hard work will pay off… fast.
